Aosta Valley is the smallest Italian region and is located at the "hub" of the Alps, surrounded by Europe's four highest mountains (Mont Blanc-Monte Bianco, Matterhorn-Cervino, Monte Rosa and Gran Paradiso), all over four thousand metres high.
The region is like an island among the mountains, and, over the centuries, this has conditioned its history, language, and administrative and political life and encouraged the development of an original collective identity.
Because of these specific characteristics, the region got from the Italian State a special autonomous status, which has enabled the valley to satisfy its aspirations, at least in part.
